This film takes place in the 80's as people can see when they see the hair and clothes on the characters. This time in history has nothing really significant going on, it's a typical day in the year on 1986.
The setting gives off the mood of normalcy making everyone feel connected to it since it is just a normal place and day. This setting makes the kids average pre-teens who are awkward with the opposite sex and joking with each other.

I don't think that kids have really been affected by the initial setting of the story because that's how most kids in America grow up, but while the kids were underground, the setting made them more brave.
If this story was placed in a different setting, I don't really think too much would be different. I think the story focuses more on the adventure and mystery rather that when the kids are; because half the movie there aren't even somewhere on maps.
If there was a symbol shown by the setting, I think that it would be the underground while going to find the treasure. I think that the tunnels represent the struggle that the kids are facing to save their house.
